After the citizenship test: what happens next
Passing the knowledge test is a big step, but it is not the last one. Here is what comes next, using what IRCC publishes.
Keep learning with a free quizStep 1: your result is confirmed
An online score is not final until IRCC has reviewed identity verification and the test session. An officer then continues to review your application, and may check other requirements as well.
Step 2: the oath of citizenship
- If your application is approved, you are invited to a citizenship ceremony.
- Adults, and applicants aged 14 and over, take the oath of citizenship there. Children under 14 do not need to take it.
- IRCC does not publish a single timeline from test to ceremony, so follow the dates in your notices.
Step 3: your proof of citizenship
After the oath, you receive your citizenship certificate. It is the proof of citizenship used to apply for a Canadian passport.
While you wait
- Keep your contact details up to date in your IRCC account so you do not miss a notice.
- Review Discover Canada. Many people find the ceremony more meaningful when they know the history behind the oath.
